Variations among Next Generation Science Standards and Other NRC Framework-Based Science Standards: Differences in Layout, Typography, and What Teachers Notice

چکیده
Science standards across 44 states in the United States are often assumed to be equivalent because they all based on National Research Council’s (NRC) Framework for K-12 Education. Twenty of those adopted Next Generation Standards (NGSS), which is NRC Framework, and 24 other developed their own Framework-based science standards. In this article, two related studies described that focused assessing homogeneity assumption. first study, a comparative document analysis categorized variety ways performance expectations presented. Analysis also relative placement information components three-dimensional learning. To assess how variations affect teacher noticing, second study nearly 300 elementary school teachers viewed, random order, seemingly similar fourth-grade from three states. Comparisons teachers’ noticing student objectives, elements stood out, rationales regarding noticing. Though both underscored do integrate tenets, findings counter assumption necessarily each or NGSS.

Assessing the Genetics Content in the Next Generation Science Standards
Science standards have a long history in the United States and currently form the backbone of efforts to improve primary and secondary education in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Although there has been much political controversy over the influence of standards on teacher autonomy and student performance, little light has been shed on how well standards cover science content...
متن کاملEncouraging Teachers to W.A.I.T Before Engaging Students In Next Generation Science Standards STEAM Activities
Effective art integration in K-12 curricula has clear benefits for classroom teachers (i.e. student achievement on standardized tests, student engagement, improving critical thinking). This paper proposes a framework based off of Claudia Cornett's levels of art integration. Teaching With About and In Through (WAIT) the arts can serve as a model for teachers who want to transform their science l...
متن کاملUsing Topic Modeling to Assess Middle School Science Discourse based on Next Generation Science Standards
In this paper we apply natural language understanding and topic modeling methods to create an instructional tool for assessing science discourse in interactive multimedia presentations that are created, shared and discussed by students. The resulting assessment prototype will enable teachers to follow student discourse in real time, to understand gaps in student learning, and to improve teachin...

T he Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), due to be released this spring, represents a revolutionary step toward establishing modern, national K–12 science education standards. Based on the recommendations of the National Research Council’s A Framework for K–12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas (NRC 2012), these performance expectations present a progressi...
متن کاملDesigning Computer-Supported Complex Systems Curricula for the Next Generation Science Standards in High School Science Classrooms
We present a curriculum and instruction framework for computer-supported teaching and learning about complex systems in high school science classrooms. This work responds to a need in K-12 science education research and practice for the articulation of design features for classroom instruction that can address the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) recently launched in the USA. We outline...
